Frank Rich, a op-ed columnist for the New York Times wrote a piece recently that claims that the “the rage is not about health care.” He believes that the tea party movement, and those opposed to the health care bill that was signed into law by Obama, are racists who are afraid that their white America has been taken over by blacks, women and gays. This is rich (pun intended) from a white person. Here is a quote from his essay:

If Obama’s first legislative priority had been immigration or financial reform or climate change, we would have seen the same trajectory. The conjunction of a black president and a female speaker of the House — topped off by a wise Latina on the Supreme Court and a powerful gay Congressional committee chairman — would sow fears of disenfranchisement among a dwindling and threatened minority in the country no matter what policies were in play.

I find it disturbing that every time someone disagrees with a liberal, then that person has to be a racist or stupid, and often both. Please note Rich’s wording, “a wise Latina on the Supreme Court.” I don’t think she is all that wise. I think she has manipulated the system to move ahead by virtue of her Hispanic heritage.

What I found most disturbing about the health care legislation was the lack of transparency in the entire process. To this day, most people do not know what is in the bill or how it is going to affect most Americans. If Obama wanted to be a “post-partisan” president, then it was incumbent on him to be inclusive and create a law that would be beneficial to all Americans and that included ideas from conservatives and liberals. If that had been the case, then there would be no opposition to the health care law. Obama’s skin color does not mean squat to me and I think that it does not to a majority of people. It is his arrogance that I find disturbing.

I hope to see a day when liberals do not fall back on the specious claim of racism whenever they are challenged. Maybe then we can have racial peace in this country.

Full disclosure: I am a naturalized immigrant who was born in Cuba. I, therefore, do not belong to any of the groups mentioned—even the wise Latina’s group since I do not consider myself wise or a Latina. Here is another disclosure: I consider myself an American first, as we all should if we are enjoying the bounty and rights of this country.

Former President and peanut farmer Jimmy Carter (D) believes that Representative Joe Wilson’s (R-SC) remarks were racist. He also claims that the reason there is a backlash against much of Obama’s policies is because people do not believe a black man can lead the country. This is the ultimate in absurdity and liberal bull.

The truth is that Americans figured out in the late 70s that President Jimmy Carter was incompetent and was ruining the country. I can remember the long gas lines, the rationing of gasoline, 21% interest loans to buy a car, hyperinflation, the holding of American hostages for over a year in Iran, a bungled attempt to free them and a general belief that the country was doomed and had seen its greatest days.

The best thing about Carter is that because of his one incompetent term in office, Ronald Reagan was elected President. President Reagan then brought us back from the precipice. His belief that “America is a shining city upon a hill whose beacon light guides freedom-loving people everywhere” is what saved us from Jimmy’s abyss. (It is also what converted me from being a Democrat to a Republican. Thanks Jimmy and Ronald Reagan.)

I don’t think that Jimmy has ever done anything right. He is ludicrous and does not even deserve the public spotlight to speak about Obama or Joe Wilson. Here is the video of his pathetic thoughts:

Americans are upset at the arrogance that the current White House occupant is showing to the wishes of the people. His race matters not. Now Jimmy, eat some peanuts and shut up. (Yes, Carter angers me more than any other Democrat. Maybe that’s racism?)

Senator McCain and Senator Obama have shown admirable discipline in not using anything related to race in this campaign for the presidency. It would be easy for Obama to accuse McCain of racism for just about anything that he says or does. It would also be easy for McCain to appeal to the electorates’s baseless fears by finding ways of reminding everyone of the obvious difference in race. Neither one has reduced this election to such a ridiculous level.

Unfortunately, there is one person who has chosen to inject race into the election. It is Congressman John Lewis, a Democrat from Georgia. He said on Saturday, October 11 that McCain’s negative tone reminds him of the hateful atmosphere fostered by Alabama Governor George Wallace in the 1960s. He said that McCain and Governor Palin were “sowing the seeds of hatred and division, and there is no need for this hostility in our political discourse.”

It is too bad that a man of John Lewis’s stature in the civil rights movement–someone who had his skull broken during a march, would attack McCain unjustly. John McCain has praised John Lewis in the past. Since he was in a prison camp in Vietnam when Dr. Martin Luther King was assassinated, McCain said, “I did not know Dr King, but I know John Lewis, and I know what he represents. And John Lewis and I may disagree on some issues, but that’s the kind of person I think are true American heroes.”

Less than a year later, after being attacked by Lewis he says, “I am saddened that John Lewis, a man I’ve always admired, would make such a brazen and baseless attack on my character and the character of the thousands of hardworking Americans who come to our events to cheer for the kind of reform that will put America on the right track.”

Let’s keep this election clean. Ad hominem attacks on McCain who is also a true American hero should not occur or be tolerated. It is those attacks that sow seeds of hatred, division and intolerance.

My ten-year-old son recently came home with a message from one of his classmates. He said that his classmate said this web site is racist. I doubt that he came up with this conclusion independently, since most young kids don’t even know what racism is (unless they have experienced it, of course). I believe that he must have gone home, told his parents about the site and that they, without even seeing the site, made this remark. The child then merely conveyed this message to my son. How unfortunate.

Children should not be indoctrinated or lied to. It would have been far more intelligent for someone who disagrees with the premise of the site, to take their son to a computer, read a post or two and then explain why they disagree with it or point out what they believe are the weaknesses in the posted opinion. That would be education. It is far easier to incorrectly classify someone else’s opinion as racism or sexism.

The fact is, that I have not even thought about Senator Obama’s race when writing posts here. It doesn’t matter to me if a candidate is white, black, green or lavender. It also does not matter to me what their gender is or their ethnic origin. I care about their policies, their ideas, their associations and their experience.

I come from an ethnic group that has been discriminated against. I have experienced racism first hand. I have survived it and learned to ignore it for what it is: ignorance.

I suspect that we all have experienced racism at one point or another. Even members of majorities experience racism–sometimes called reverse racism. It is not pleasant. It should not exist, but it does. Even the least racist of us harbor some ill feelings towards some group somewhere for whatever obscure, rational or irrational reason.

That said, this site is dedicated to presenting political opinions based on facts about the candidates. There is no room for racism here.
